PostSubject: War calculation   Tue Oct 05, 2010 5:38 pm

I believe that we should calculate a war effort. This is the equation that i thought was fair and balanced

military is 10% of the population at the start of the war

like for example, the population of nation A is 20 million

20 millionx .10 (10%)=2,000,000 military personnel; Then you times your potential forces with the percentage in your budget in the defensive section of the economic breakdown

Nation A has 35% war defense budget.

2,000,000 x0.35=700,000 military personel in active duty

then take 2,000,000-700,000=1.3 million on reserve

The 700,000 are the initial and true active duty, the 1.3 million left would be either retired, reserve, or camp.

you can only use the 700,000 for offensive measures and you can call in the 1.3 million more after an invasion of your country

What do you think?

That's almost exactly what I did to get my own figures, but 10% is awfully high. My current total is only 3%. I'll grant 10% to the smaller nations for the sake of parity, though.

I like this. Very good, NX.

The only difference between mine and this is that my active is actually reversed.

980 million (rounded down) x .03 = 29 million (rounded down)

29 million (rounded down) x .38 (38% war budget) = 11 million (rounded down)

29 million (rounded down) - 11 million (rounded down) = 18 million (rounded down)

(CRAP! NOW MY MILITARY NUMBERS AND SECRETS ARE OUT IN THE OPEN! OH NOES!)

I've reversed mine and maintain 18 million active and 11 million on reserve. I have no problem if other nations wish to do the same as I have done.

10% is the official population count on the NS forums, so i used that. 15% is the max you can produce from your military, but that is really pushing it and allowed if a smaller country was attacking a bigger one for proportion use.

10% would put me at 98,000,000 troops. It would be much harder to maintain, but I could do it. I'd also dwarf everyone in the region. I already do. I believe you see my point, though. I think I'd prefer to keep it at a maximum of 5% for larger nations and up to 10% or 12% for smaller nations.

of course, i understand.

it was just an example. I think that, to keep order, we should have you watch calculations and see where it goes.

The next step would be to set the boundaries of where SMALL and LARGE nations sit.

I'm going to go based on population for this one.

Small = 50 million (RP) or fewer? ( < 500 million NS)

Large = 100 million (RP) and higher? ( > 1 billion NS)

Just a start. 50 million IRL would be quite a large nation indeed, but this is NS and when has NS ever made sense?

I'm open to suggestions from the peanut gallery. Razz

I just modeled my numbers after Russia, which has a smaller population then me but a comparable military size. Except I have like 18 times their defence budget.

Not completely true, Ras. Obviously, you do not have 1.183 billion but nrather 118.3 million. That is a coefficient of .1 to begin with. However, you are also very capitslist. You do not have an income tax of 71% but rather (probably) 40%. A coefficient of .07 is very reasonable.

So, your military budget is only 13 times that of Russia, rounding up.

(This gives communists a unique advantage. Although our economies are generally weaker, we actually DO have 100% income taxes. NS Economy's calculations are therefore more accurate for us. Our coefficient would be a mere .1)

Well keep in mind that the rating is merely for economic strength, and not necessarily economic freedom, even though economic freedom is sure to help. I should point out that the Soviet Union had both the strongest economy in the world and the largest population in the world until about the 70's/80's, and slipping for brief periods before then as well (most notably during WW2). The Soviet economy was a monster in the 50's and 60's during the Krushchev Thaw and de-Stalinization.

Very true. However, most NS commies, unsurprisingly, are hard-core leftists, who tend to favor greater economic regulation and environmental protection.

Ahhhhh, Khrushchev, I love you, and I hate you. You were definitely not brilliant, unlike every other Soviet premier. However, you ruled sanely. But you were a particularly militant atheist; your anti-Catholic policies were especially extreme.

I definitely exceeded my comma quota in this post.
